My main focus is on organic growth, but I'm ecstatic about the feedback and interest I'm getting from sellers and shoppers!

Farmers, Artists, Retailers, Jewelers, Carpenters, Auto-Detailers, Massage Therapists, Healers, Underwater Basket Weavers, Specialists, Practitioners, Makers, Shakers, and all of you in between; if you're a Western Slope based small business, we'd love to work with you!

Simply put

The Open Market is a place for Sellers to post and manage their listings with the full autonomy of choosing how they’d like to handle the sale. The Open Market is basically an interactive bulletin board where everything on the site is a customized advertisement for the Seller, and is a gateway to send customers and clients to the Sellers destination of choice – whether that be your own website, social media page, your brick and mortar business, an event, your email, your phone, or even to your retailers.

The vision: recreate the farmers market, and put it online. A place where a diverse selection of local Sellers can share their pool of local Shoppers.

What is it?• Listings and transactions work like Craigslist, with higher standards of quality control, and sellers are given more options for how their listings are seen by Shoppers.
• The front end works and feels like Amazon or Etsy, but Seller’s aren’t forced in to insane fees and the focus is on the Western Slope’s marketplace.
How does it work?• The Seller creates a listing, complete with Open Market Pay to submit for approval from the OM admin team.
• After approval, the listing publishes to the frontend where Shoppers can find the product through a direct search, a filtered browse, product suggestion, or more.
• Once the Shopper decides to purchase your product or services, they follow your product’s Open Market Pay guidelines to start the sale. Click here for more technical information.
• From here, the sale progresses in whatever way works best for you.
What’s Open Market Pay?• The Open Market doesn’t have any onsite payment options between Shoppers and Sellers. Instead, we encourage autonomy through off-site transactions that proceed in a method of the Seller’s choosing. Open Market Pay is our payment portal for a free and open market. Click here to learn more about Open Market Pay.
• Open Market Pay gives several options for Sellers to pick and choose their contact information, and payment methods. One of each is required, but your choice of each is optional.
Who is this for?• Artists, Farmers, Ranchers, Retailers, Crafters, Specialists, Healers, Trades-Folk, Makers, Shakers, and everyone in between. The Open Market has been built with flexibility and simplicity in mind to serve the Western Slope.
• Anyone who has goods or services that they’d like to sell to their local marketplace and beyond.
• Anyone who is interested in directly supporting their local marketplace, and reducing our growing need and dependence for extended supply chains.
• Anyone who tries to be a conscious consumer, and wants to work towards keeping their money local.
• Anyone who believes they can make an impact in their neighborhoods with simple shifts in perspective and tangible action.
• Anyone who believes in the autonomy and liberties of engaging in a free and open market.
What can be sold here?• Because we don’t currently offer in-store transactions, The Open Market is technically an advertisement listings venue. This means that everything on the site is a customized advertisement for the Seller, and is a gateway to send customers and clients to the Sellers destination of choice.
• The Open Market is primed for a wide variety of listings, but we do have some strict exceptions to keep the site functional, ethical, and legal (See The Open Market Policies page for more). The Open Market is for sellers who have something original to sell, even if their neighbors are selling the same thing – friendly competition in an open market is a win/win for everyone involved.
• This isn’t a yard sale – this is a farmer’s market. Since The Open Market acts as a service to connect Sellers to Shoppers, Sellers need something to sell. Unlike Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace, The Open Market is built for small businesses. This is not a storefront for used goods, gigs, etc. We only cater to small businesses who have regularly reproducible goods and services. See The Open Market Policies page for more.
• For now, the main focus for The Open Market’s inventory is on products or nontangibles, and services; but classes, scheduled events, etc. are absolutely encouraged if you choose to utilize a product listing for it.
Examples: An Open Market product listing can be a digital/virtual/nontangible like a coupon, gift cards, ticket, a CSA, subscription gateway, audiobook, PDF download, e-book, etc. Or an Open Market listing can be for something physical like jewelry, fine wood crafts, CBD products, cheesecake, beef, poultry, a CSA, fishing lures, custom built sheds, handcrafted dolls, clay cereal chalices, etc. Or, further, an Open Market listing can be for services or classes/events like massage therapy, yoga, tattoo work, basket weaving classes, tarot, auto repair, breathwork, catering, window window cleaning, group yelling/kicking/screaming, car detailing, festivals, dog grooming, etc. We currently do not offer any scheduling or calendar functionality, but it is a possibility! Contact The Open Market Support Center if you’d like to see this happen!
What does is cost?• Currently the services at The Open Market are 100% free.
• We do plan to implement a simple membership/subscription fee for Sellers, with just 2 or 3 tiers. Most likely something like $9/mo, and $66/mo, with various perks for each option. We may also implement listing fees. But, this will not be decided until we’ve collected sufficient data.
• No ads. No complex overpriced fees. No price gouging or undercutting, and I will not slap you with fines if you sell at a lower price somewhere else. Currently there is no commission, but once we have onsite transactions implemented, there will be a locals friendly commission on each onsite sale so we can keep the lights on.
What’s required from me?• Internet access
• A valid email
• Your own products or services to sell
• Some patience in learning The Open Market. I didn’t invent anything new here, in fact I outright stole was inspired by some extremely popular websites and platforms to figure out what would work best for the Western Slope. The Open Market rhymes pretty well with the workflow of these other sites, so it should feel familiar if you’ve done any online shopping.
What do i get out of it?• Competitive rates with a familiar online shopping style and workflow and a lot less maintenance and upkeep.
• A shared customer pool with your neighboring Sellers. This means you’ll get immediate exposure to the rest of the registered Western Slope’s customer base. The algorithm has been designed for the community here!
• Simple set-up, easy to use, and hassle free. As soon as you get it set up, you can essentially walk away and let your Shoppers come to you.
• You own your autonomy in how you conduct your transactions. You can direct your Shoppers to your business website, physical store, an event, etc. and from here you’ll collect the payment method of your choice in exchange for your goods and services.
• Participate in a project specifically designed to help your neighborhood prosper!
What do I have to lose?• Honestly, aside from a bit of a learning curve, and some set up time I have not been able to think of anything. I’m completely open to hearing and considering any criticisms or concerns, and appreciative of anyone who’s taken the time to share their voices here.
• The Open Market has been designed to be simple, convenient, sustainable, and reliable for both Shoppers and Sellers. Once you set up shop, we suspect you’ll have minimal need to invest much more time in to maintenance, advertising, update adjustments, etc.
• There are no contractual obligations that keep Sellers or their listings on The Open Market. If you’d like to delete your account, we’ll make it simple and quick for you, just reach out to us and we’ll remove you and your listings from the site.

What does The Open Market cost?

So glad you asked! The Open Market currently does not cost anyone a thing.*

But, with full transparency: when The Open Market admin team has established some honest operational experience and a representative data-set to properly crunch the numbers – the plan is to launch a membership program and listing fees. In honor of simplicity, we’ll move towards 2 or 3 flat rate membership tiers, the first of which will be free, and each tier will offer an array of service options and perks.
