Seller Incentives

The Open Market’s vision is to recreate the farmers market, and put it online. A place where a diverse selection of Western Slope Sellers can share their pool of local Shoppers on a convenient and familiar shopping platform without the distractions. And, it’s all local.

  • Post and manage your own product/service listings on a platform that’s been built in the Western Slope by a life-long Western Slope resident.
  • Choose exactly how you want to handle all of your sales.
  • Every listing can serve as a standalone sales point, or can easily work in unison to connect shoppers to any other online or offline sales tool you have.
    • Send customers directly to your website, social media, a brick and mortar retailer, an event, your email, your phone, or even to one of the corporate monopolies if it works in your favor.
  • The shopping experience looks and feels similar to Amazon or Etsy – so you know your customers can easily find you.
  • Participate in a project specifically designed to help your neighborhood prosper!

Simply put:

The Open Market is an interactive small business bulletin board where all of the listings on the site are seller advertisements, custom tailored to the seller’s preferences and needs:

  • Listings and transactions work like Craigslist, with higher standards of quality control, and sellers are given more options for how their listings are seen by Shoppers.
  • The front end works and feels like Amazon or Etsy, but Seller’s aren’t forced in to insane fees and the algorithm is built for making connections in the Western Slope’s marketplace.

  • Sellers set up a profile and listings that showcase their offerings.
  • These listings are displayed proudly on The Open Market's various shop pages where shoppers can search and filter to connect with their local marketplace.
    • All the listings are set up so that your shoppers can identify where you're at, what you're selling, what your terms are, your transaction/shipping preferences and so much more.
    • Once your shopper chooses to shop with you, they can either contact you directly, purchase from your webstore, or find you at any listed locations. Really, this whole process is set up so that shoppers shop on your terms, and The Open Market is just here to help make the connections.
    • Click here for more technical information.

To get started you’ll need to register as a Seller, and then wait to be approved. After that you’ll set up your listings and profile – which won’t require any additional maintenance or upkeep unless you’ve got changes you’d like to make.

  •

The Open Market is built for easy navigation, and no-frills transactions. It's a simple process for you to connect with your neighborhood marketplace, and the algorithm is set up so that when you're winning, your neighbors are winning.

Currently, The Open Market is 100% free for Sellers. And, Shoppers always shop free.

    • Just like any other ecommerce site, Sellers can create listings for individual products/services, or they can make a single listing for a category or a group of products/services.
        • Currently, creating new listings on the site is completely free, but I will eventually introduce a local's friendly listing fee. Any listing made before this will not be charged, ever.

    • Currently, the site is an interactive bulletin board where the listings act as a customized advertisement, and a gateway to send customers and clients to the Seller's destination of choice - whether that be your own website, social media page, your brick and mortar business, an event, your email, your phone, or even to your retailers.
        • There are currently no onsite transactions, but this should be ready for showtime by the end of 2024. The use of the payment portal will be completely optional, and will include options for paypal, credit/debit, venmo, etc. Each transaction will have a local's friendly commission fee attached to it.

    • For the time being, I would be happy to set all of your content up and manage it for you. You'll have full access to manage your content to your liking, but feel free to contact me any time if you'd like for me to make any updates for you, free of charge.
        • This service is completely free for now, but I do plan on implementing an optional and local's friendly membership service for sellers who'd like for me to manage their content for them.

  • Because there are currently no onsite transactions, The Open Market is technically an advertisement listings venue. This means that everything on the site is a customized advertisement for the Seller, and is a gateway to send customers and clients to the Sellers destination of choice.
  • The Open Market is primed for a wide variety of listings, but we do have some strict exceptions to keep the site functional, ethical, and legal (See The Open Market Policies page for more).
  • The Open Market is for sellers who have something original to sell, even if their neighbors are selling the same thing – friendly competition in an open market is a win/win for everyone involved.
  • This isn’t a yard sale – this is a farmer’s market. Since The Open Market acts as a service to connect Sellers to Shoppers, Sellers need something to sell. Unlike Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace, The Open Market only caters to small businesses who have regularly reproducible goods and services. See The Open Market Policies page for more.
  • For now, The Open Market is optimized for products (tangible or nontangible), and services; but classes, scheduled events, etc. are absolutely encouraged if you choose to utilize a product listing for it.

Currently, most of the sellers are artists, makers, and producers of a wide span of things from jewelry to candy, from picture frames to custom furniture, from tattoos to poultry, and cleaning services to massage therapy. The Open Market is incredibly flexible and has plenty of room to grow!

The vision is to create an online farmers market, so any vendor you'd find there would likely be suitable to sell at The Open Market.

  • Artists, Farmers, Ranchers, Retailers, Crafters, Specialists, Healers, Trades-Folk, Makers, Shakers, and everyone in between. The Open Market has been built with flexibility and simplicity in mind to serve the Western Slope.
  • Anyone who:
    • has goods or services that they’d like to sell to their local marketplace and beyond.
    • is interested in directly supporting their local marketplace, and reducing our growing need and dependence for extended supply chains.
    • aims to be a conscious consumer, and wants to work towards keeping their money local.
    • believes they can make an impact in their neighborhoods with simple shifts in perspective and tangible action.
    • believes in the autonomy and liberties of engaging in a free and open market.

It's worth mentioning that since The Open Market is so young, I am absolutely open to suggestions. Any ideas or needs that come across my desk now will have a big impact on the trajectory and the experience of the site.

  • Currently the services at The Open Market are 100% free for now.
  • The goal is that by the end of 2024, there will be an optional onsite payment portal. After this is set up, there will be a locals friendly commission on each onsite sale so we can keep the lights on and better serve more of our neighbors.
  • We do plan to implement a simple and optional membership fee for Sellers who are seeking content management and other perks, with just 3 tiers: a free option, a simple option, and a full service option.
  • At some point, fees will begin to be implemented for things like a per-listing fee, and various perks for more exposure.
  • No ads. No complex overpriced fees. No price gouging or undercutting, and you won't be slapped with fines if you sell at a lower price somewhere else.

  • Some patience in learning The Open Market. I didn’t invent anything new here, in fact I outright stole was inspired by some extremely popular websites and platforms to figure out what would work best for the Western Slope. The Open Market rhymes pretty well with the workflow of these other sites, so it should feel familiar if you’ve done any online shopping.

  • The Open Market was designed specifically to connect shoppers and sellers, and every step of the building process has been oriented towards simplifying the process for both parties. But, without having any previous experience in this realm, I may have missed my mark in some ways. So, as we learn and grow the site will adapt and evolve - and, naturally there will be growing pains.
  • Other than that, aside from a bit of a learning curve, and some set up time I have not been able to think of anything. I’m completely open to hearing and considering any suggestions, critiques, compliments, or concerns, and appreciative of anyone who’s taken the time to share their voices here.
  • There are no contractual obligations that keep Shoppers shopping, or Sellers or their content on The Open Market. If you’d like to delete your account, we’ll make it simple and quick for you, just reach out to us and we’ll remove you and all of your content from the site, no problem!

About The Open Market

The seed of The Open Market was planted during the 2020 lockdowns in the form of a facebook group. The group was incredibly helpful, but it became apparent relatively quickly that the group was incredibly limited on what it could offer the community. I began building the site in the summer of 2021; but, I never imagined I’d have the doors open by the end of 2023. I’m incredibly excited about the trajectory of The Open Market, and I am not at all naive of the work ahead. The growth up to this point has been a slow organic bloom and I intend to keep that pace moving forward.

My goal is to build an ecosystem here. A community for those in the Western Slope who resonate with the ideas of focusing on our community’s abundance instead of throwing our resources (time, money, energy, attention, etc) at things that are out of our control and they realistically don’t even serve us. Read more.

The Open Market is currently a one-man operation, owned and operated by Jon Hutson. I was born and raised in Montrose/Olathe, and I'm currently living in Grand Junction - but, I've lived and spent a considerable bit of time in Paonia, Durango, Alamosa, Avon, Telluride, Gunnison, and Glenwood Springs. I'm an adventurer, a musician, a geologist, a woodworker, a mountain biker, a fisherman, a coding nerd-dork, a metal-head dirtbag, and I shop local as often as I can. Here's links to my Instagram, Facebook, Soundcloud, and Linkedin if you'd like my receipts.

The idea is to recreate the farmers market, and put it online. A place where a wide variety of Sellers can share a wide variety of customers, and have the autonomy to process their goods and services in a way that works best for them.

How The Open Market Works

The Open Market is built for easy navigation, and no-frills transactions. We’ve set up a simple process for you to connect with your customers, offering clarity and peace of mind that you’re not being bamboozled in to funding another billionaire’s race to space while supporting monopolistic oligarchies.

Product creation

While creating your products you can get as simple or as detailed as you wish. Everything below is at your disposal while creating your product listing, and most of it is not required for success with The Open Market – but, these are some reliable tools to have on hand.

Product presentation (required information) Title, price, description, image, image gallery, relevant categories, and keyword tags.
Open Market Pay contact and payment options (at least one of each), and your store policies.
Your location and service area.
Product data (optional information) Choose between a Product or a Service
Price, or sales price and pricing schedule. You can even set up multiple price points on a single listing.
Link to other products for up-sells, cross-sells, and/or accessories
Add product attributes for things like sizes, color, etc
Open Market Pay (only one of each required)• The Open Market doesn’t have any onsite payment options between Shoppers and Sellers. Instead, we encourage autonomy through off-site transactions that proceed in a method of the Seller’s choosing. Open Market Pay is our payment portal for a free and open market.
Open Market Pay gives several options for Sellers to pick and choose their contact information, and payment methods. One of each is required, but your choice of each is optional.
Contact options: email, phone number, public address, web address, or private Open Market Contact Form.
Payment options: barter, cash, crypto, delivery, event, in-store, meet up, pay-later, pick-up, trade, 3rd party service, etc.
Click here to learn more about Open Market Pay.
Set your product policies (optional information) “All sales are final”, which just means you choose to just use The Open Market’s Policies on this product; alternatively you can leave a message that says “Contact us, we’re here to help.”; or, you can write your own message.
Write your own Product Policies, which is in addition to, but not preceding The Open Market’s Policies.
Link directly to your own Terms page.
Visit The Open Market’s Policies page for more information.
Streamline the process Import or export your products to or from The Open Market with a CSV file
Duplicate a final product to simplify the process for your next product.
