The Open Market is fully functional, but there are a couple sections that are admittedly lacking, or just outright incomplete and/or incredibly sloppy (in my opinion! See if you can find them.) I have every intention of tidying things up in due time. But, my main focus is getting the ball rolling.

For the time being, The Open Market Admin Team would happily set up and manage your entire account if you’re not feeling up to the task, and I'd be happy to walk you through any or every one of the steps involved. I very strongly believe in what The Open Market is capable of, and I’m fully aware that it may take a while for it to catch on. I would HAPPILY help my neighbors where I can. Just reach out directly to hello@theopenmarket.co or visit The Open Market support Center any time.

Your patience is massively appreciated!

What is The Open Market?

The Open Market is a regionally focused multi-vendor eCommerce platform, similar in style and organization to Amazon or Etsy, with the transactional flow of Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. The Open Market is designed to connect customers to goods and services from their local mom & pop shops, artists, farmers, and tradesfolk; all through the convenience of one simple site.

TLDR: The Open Market is an online agora designed for your neighborhood marketplace. Visit the about me page to learn more.

What’s an agora?!

Glad you asked! An agora is an ancient Greek term for a marketplace, or a gathering place of ideas.

These days the term gets used for a parallel commerce system that has a focus on being detached from monopolies, big box stores, over-extended supply chains, etc.

Is my money and information safe at The Open Market?

Currently, there are no transactions of any kind that take place here, so there isn’t a need for sharing any banking details.

However, for all users, The Open Market does require a couple of pieces of basic information for logging in, leaving reviews, and initiating transactions.

For Sellers, there’s considerably more information required for creating products, setting up Open Market Pay, and crafting a public profile.

For either party, the only sensitive information you’ll be storing on The Open Market is your login credentials, which we have taken great measures to assure is secure, and we highly recommend you practice solid and sensible password management tactics to assure we are both doing our part on keeping things tight.

Does The Open Market anticipate doing onsite transactions in the future?

Onsite transactions were the original plan but they are incredibly involved overly restricted (and that kind of goes against “The Open Market” as an idea, doesn’t it?) They’re a great idea for any sort of e-commerce obviously but they’re not really necessary here. That being said we’d like to make them available someday. But, the important thing to us is making sure that the site works to connect neighbors to their local marketplace.

How does The Open Market make its money?

Currently, The Open Market is completely free. However, after we gather sufficient data on the short and long term operations of the site, we’ll implement a membership fee, which will be competitively priced. Sellers and Shoppers will have two or three payment options each, which will offer different perks, but none of this is written in stone yet, and The Open Market is not worried about how it will make money quite yet – our foremost concern is making sure our processes work efficiently for our neighbors. Sign up to The Open Market Newsletter for updates on our progress with this.

The Open Market does not sell any of your data – personal, or public. The site’s been built to be as transparent, straightforward, honest, and helpful as possible. We’re not in this for the money – we’re in this for the resilience of our neighborhood. Visit The Open Market Policies page for more.

How do I use The Open Market services?

If you’re just browsing or if you’re a Shopper, a good starting place would be to look at the Shopping Guide. If you’d like to become a Seller, visit the Seller Registration, and if you’re a Seller looking for guidance, then I’d like to present to you: the Sales Guide.

We’d be happy to help over at The Open Market Support Center if you’d like some clarity.

Tell me about Open Market Pay.

The definition of Open Market is: A freely competitive market that allows shoppers and sellers to operate without restrictions. And, Open Market Pay is the site’s Open Market payment portal.

The site was built to aggregate the inventory of your local goods and services, and allow shoppers to quickly and conveniently find what they’re looking for to initiate a sale with the seller.

Open Market Pay is the fulcrum between the ease of ecommerce and the liberty of how you shop in your neighborhood marketplace. Visit the Open Market Guides for more.

Where do I sign up?

If you’d like to start a Shopper account, you’ll need to Register as a Shopper. After you do that, you’ll be able to Register as a Seller if that’s your motive!

How do I reset my password?

We have a password reset page that takes users to the OM admin site backend. It’s got a completely different layout, but rest assured, you’re in the right spot.

How can I manage my emails from The Open Market?

At The Open Market Settings page you can manage your email subscription status.

How do I change my information?

Shoppers and Sellers looking to change any of their login credentials or Shopper usernames can go to my account.

Sellers can go to the Seller’s Dashboard to update their Seller’s profile, update products, and more.

Why do certain parts of the site look kind of off or don’t make any sense at all?

The Open Market has been optimized for Andoid mobile browsers (Firefox, Brave, Chrome). The site was built and tested on Windows and Linux Ubuntu (Firefox, Chrome), and somewhat tested using iOS (Chrome, Safari). We used Android mobile (specifically Firefox) as the baseline while building The Open Market, but due to the wide variability between all the devices and browsers, there’s no way we could have feasibly tested to the same extent on all the devices and browsers.

It’s our goal to provide simple and efficient online local shopping to as many local advocates as possible, so it is definitely on our list of things to do to clean up The Open Market experience for more of our users. Please reach out to The Open Market Support Center if you’re encountering technical issues, or have any grievances you’d like to address.

Is The Open Market hiring?

Currently, we are not.

However, drop us a line at The Open Market Support Center if you’ve got ideas. We like to make friends.

How to make a purchase on The Open Market?

As soon as you find the product you’d like to purchase, you’ll need to reach out to the seller by the methods they’ve listed on that particular product’s page. From there, the sale is completely between you and the seller, and outside of The Open Market website.

We’ve tried to keep this as simple as possible for everyone, and keep the shopper requirements to a bare minimum. Right now, all that’s required is your login credentials, and a name/username. As likely need to provide information to a Seller once you initiate a sale, but that will be external from The Open Market site, so that’s between you and the Seller.

Is my money and data safe with The Open Market?

Seller FAQ

How do I contact The Open Market support team?

Visit The Open Market Support Center.

How can I create a Seller account?

You’ll need to first Register as a Shopper before you can fill out the Seller Registration to start a Seller account. Visit the Seller Registration page for more information.

How do I change my username?

You are not allowed to change your login username, but if you’d like to change your public Shopper display name its in your account.

Sellers must request a name change at the The Open Market Support Center

My username is showing up differently in different places, how do I make them the same?

Your Shopper display name can be changed at your account, and this is the name youll see when you purchase as a Shopper, or when you leave a review on a fellow S’s product. Your Seller account is basically built on top of your Shopper account, and it has its own name that all of your products and services are attached to. To change your Seller name, please visit the The Open Market Support Center and submit a request.

Technically, as a Seller, you can have two aliases on The Open Market, one as a Shopper, another as a Seller. Or, you can just keep the naming system uniform so that your Seller account can operate as a Shopper account. This might mean you’ll be better off juggling multiple log-in accounts if you’d like to keep your Shopper purchasing and reviewing power, separate from your Sellers selling power.

This is definitely something we’d like to simplify in the future, but for now feel free to reach out to The Open Market Support Center if you’d like to talk!

Can I still shop as a Shopper if I have a Seller account?

Absolutely! A Seller account still operates as a Shopper account in terms of shopping and leaving reviews. But, Sellers have the added functionality of managing their own listings and contributing to, and reaping the benefits of being a part of, The Open Market.

Can I leave reviews and ratings on other Seller’s profiles and listings?

Absolutely, you can. But, it’s important to note that your reviews will be based off of the information (Shopper display name) in your account, and not based off the information in your Seller Dashboard. So if you’d like to leave a review as a Seller, it would be best to keep your Shopper display name on your account and your Seller name the same.

Do I need any business licensing to open a Seller account?

You don’t need any business licensing to sell at The Open Market, but this is not a place for illegal transactions. Please see The Open Market Policies for more.

What services does The Open Market offer?

The main service that The Open Market offers is advertising space. We give Sellers a venue to create and showcase their listings to a shared Shopper base who are all locally-minded, conscientious consumers looking to support their local economies. Please visit the Seller Incentives page for more.

Does The Open Market keep track of all of my relevant income for taxes, etc?

Transactions are not processed through The Open Market – we are not marketplace facilitators. We are a bulletin board designed for small businesses, farmers, hobbyists, etc. to advertise and funnel Shoppers. Please visit The Open Market Policies page for more.

Can multiple users manage my store?

Currently, The Open Market does not do this. Visit The Open Market Support Center to request this feature.

Can one Seller manage multiple stores?

Yes! Just reach out to The Open Market Support Center and we’ll get you set up with the ability to manage multiple stores from one account.

How much does this service cost?

Currently, The Open Market is completely free. Please visit the Seller Incentives page for more.

Tell me about Open Market Pay.

Open Market Pay is simply a means of communication between sellers and shoppers to encourage free-market transactions. Please visit the Become a Seller page for more.

Can I sell personal belongings or single-occurrence used items?

The Open Market is not a yard sale, it’s a farmer’s market. We may potentially implement a p2p (peer-to-peer) section where people can sell single-occurrence used goods and various one-offs, but right now the site is devoted to supporting small businesses with recurring sales

We would love to hear from you, if you’d like to request a service or share your thoughts over at The Open Market Support Center

How can I create and sell a product or service listing?

Visit The Open Market Sales Guide for guidance on how the Seller accounts operate and helpful tips on how to boost your ROI within The Open Market.
