“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” – MT

25% of locally owned business can’t afford to stay in business due to low cash-flow, even though 65% of American consumer cash flow is spent in-store.

Spread the word, your neighbors are doing good work. Even just shifting 10% per month to local shopping has a massive impact on improving the quality of your community. It’s a no brainer. Think it’s not? Literally spread the word, see how quickly that 10% per shopper turns to millions once the idea gets around.

My gut reaction is to be angry about how much money is syphoned out of the community and in to the pockets of these goofy ass monopoly CEOs, but seeing the numbers puts things in perspective.

Things can be different. We are not victims of circumstance. The smallest adjustments make big differences over time, and having a community oriented towards abundance is a force multiplier.

But, do we even have that sort of attention span anymore?

I have a growing list of people to get set up, but I’m here to serve. I strongly believe in what The Open Market can do for the Western Slope, so I’d like to get the feelers out to find more people that this project resonates with.

I’ve connected with a lot of people here with some real gumption, and a lot of amazing ideas and win/win forward thinking energy for our collective western slope neighborhoods, and I cannot even express the joy that brings me.

But, there’s more of you out there. And, I’d like to connect with you.

Please like and share.

I’ve gone into detail on what The Open Market is on my other posts and the site’s About, FAQ, and Site Guide pages, but for now I’m just sharing this simple message. Contact me for any questions or to get started, or sign up directly at the site below. The link is also in my bio.

Small business in Colorado drove 73.4% of the increase in jobs in 2023. 47.3% CO employees worked for small businesses in 2023, which make up 99.5% of businesses.

Great news! You fucking matter. Your choices have a huge impact on your neighbors, and all of their neighbors. Even if your dream is something as simple as teaching underwater basket weaving in Portuguese, I guarantee you someone out there has been wanting to learn. If your heart is telling you to do it, jump in. It could lead to financial prosperity, or it could connect some of your neighbors at the very least.

There’s something in the air, we’re all a little bit on edge. Wondering what’s next. But these stats are incredibly uplifting for me. The guts it takes to stick your neck out as an entrepreneur has been baffling me, but these numbers are a simple reminder of the difference it can make. Sure, we’re fighting against a black hole, but the more complacent we get and deny our better intentions, the worse it becomes. Getting in alignment with our aspirations is paramount.

These numbers show that small businesses still throw big punches in the ring against corporate players at their own game and we’re not going anywhere – but how much more would it really even take to tilt the scale?

Go to for sources on the stats and some beautiful Western Slope small businesses and more.

Square up, none of this is going to get any easier. Getting right with your lungs is a good start, though.

Let me know what town you’re in, and I’ll slide in to your DMs with some good news.

The Open Market is open for business for the Western Slope at www.theopenmarket.CO.

The Open Market is essentially a bulletin board for local sellers to list advertisements for their goods and services in an environment that flows like Amazon or Etsy. And just like Craigslist, there are no onsite transactions, which means that shoppers and sellers have the autonomy to conduct business on their own terms.

If this idea resonates with you, it’s a simple process to register and there’s nothing to lose. The Open Market is completely free, and will be until I have some honest experience running the site. At that point, I do plan on implementing a simple and reasonably priced membership tier with different perks for anyone selling on The Open Market. No commission fees. No listings fees. Shoppers always shop free.

If you want to join in, but you’re feeling shaky about taking on what could be an extra chore – reach out to me! I would GLADLY set up and manage your account for you, and yours will be the final word for all of your content.

The site is fully functional as is, but there’s still quite a bit to do before I push for marketing. That said, the site will undoubtedly grow through changes within the next couple of years, but joining these movements early ensures that you have a voice in this growth.

The idea came out of the 2020 lockdowns, and I began building the site in 2021 with no prior experience in building a website, let alone a business, from the ground up. It’s been a slow and organic growth; but I am absolutely confident in the trajectory and the power of The Open Market. I intend to keep the same organic growth moving forward as I open the doors for the Western Slope.

I appreciate you for taking the time to read through this; it’s genuinely rewarding for me to build something that has so much potential to help my neighbors, and their neighbors, and so on.

Drop a comment below, I’ll slide a link to your DM.

The Open Market is an online venue built for the Western Slope’s community markets. We’re still working on a launch date, but the site is a hybrid of local shopping, ecommerce simplicity, and the autonomy of off-site transactions by encouraging shoppers and sellers to buy, sell, and trade as they see fit.

Shoppers can expect an intuitive shopping flow like an Amazon or Etsy, but with an off-site payment portal that works like Craigslist or Google Maps. At The Open Market you’ll find simple and highly effective tools for searching, browsing, filtering, and discovering hidden gems in your area.

Small businesses can create and manage their listings, policies, profiles and customer relations to their liking. Redirect customers from The Open Market to a physical store, an event, a class, any other website, app, or even directly to an email or phone, or more. Display your choice payment options: barter/trade, cash, crypto, credit/debit, 3rd party processors and more.

I’ve utilized the industry’s best tools and practices for security, stability, and operations to give the community a tool for neighbors to connect with their neighborhood marketplace. The intent has been to offer as much flexibility and functionality as possible, without degrading simplicity.

Shoppers always shop free. And, eventually, a simple 2 tier membership fee for sellers will be implemented with various perks. It will be completely free until I’ve gathered sufficient live data on site operations. I’m not interested in implementing listing, transaction, commission, or venue fees.

As of now, the site is fully functional, and my current focus is on legalities, workflow tests, etc. Registration is not active yet for shoppers or sellers, but I’d love to hear from you – I’d appreciate a like and a share; and, I’d be ecstatic if you checked out the site and told your neighbors.

My hope with The Open Market is to foster connections and organically build depth with those that naturally harmonize and gravitate towards these ideas and this trajectory.

Thanks for taking the time.

Jon Hutson

There are no big problems, just lots of little ones. – HF

There’s a Japanese concept called #kaizen that’s essentially about incrementally progressing towards a worthy ideal in iddy-biddy 0.0001% (or so) actions at a time.

In the moment this can seem redundant, to say the least. But, over time, with continued input, it compounds in to something huge and tangible with real substance and it’s got incredible momentum behind it.

Obviously things aren’t as black and white as “do X, get Y”, and progress is never a straight line. But, this idea has been a paradigm shifter for me. I fall off my horse a lot, but part of the incremental improvements is to just keep coming back to building momentum, one small piece after another. And, at this scale it almost doesn’t even matter if it’s sub-par work, because the more you fail, the more you understand what needs to be done, and the better you get at doing the thing.

The video is ants.

The song snippet is Birds Lament by Moon Dog, who was a fully blind homeless composer who busked for change with self-made instruments to make a living in NYC in the 60’s while always dressed up like a viking. Yeah, look him up.
